Lymphoedema is swelling that occurs when lymph fluid builds up in body tissues due to changes in the lymphatic system. It most commonly affects an arm or leg, but can appear in other areas. It may develop when cancer or its treatments damage or block the lymphatic system, preventing lymph fluid from draining properly and causing swelling.
How it helps
Lymphoedema therapy focuses on supporting lymph flow, reducing swelling, and protecting the health of affected tissues. Gentle exercise, specialised massage, compression garments or wraps, and good skin care are all part of effective management.
With consistent care, lymphoedema therapy can make movement easier and more comfortable, reduce discomfort, lower the risk of infection, and enhance overall wellbeing – helping you stay active throughout cancer.
Getting started
If you notice persistent swelling or are at risk of lymphoedema, ask your GP or cancer specialist for a referral to an accredited lymphoedema practitioner or physiotherapist. They can assess your stage, teach self-management techniques, and guide you on safe exercise, massage, and compression options.
